They have programs all over the world for 7-14 days I think. I participated in one a few years ago, they are expensive but it helps pay for the research. I did "Dolphins and Whales of Abaco Island" in the Bahamas. It was really fun, we got to see how the research was done, we went out on a boat every day looking for dolphins and whales and would record data about them. We also saw how to do photo ID and entered the data in the computer. There are other volunteer programs like that but I can't think of specific names or organizations.

For those interested, there is a new website describing marine megafauna inhabiting the South Atlantic Bight (SAB). This site, created by South Carolina Sea Grant/ Southeast Center for Ocean Science and Excellence (COSEE), focuses on specific research projects being conducted on marine mammals, sea turtles and sharks. It also contains hotlinks to conservation and volunteer programs making it a wonderful resource for educators, school children and the general public. You can visit this area under "Exploring the South Atlantic Bight" in the COSEE website at http://www.scseagrant.org/se-cosee/sab.htm This resource is a work in progress so any comments or suggestions are highly welcome.

During the summer you can take a 2 week internship at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center at NC Topsail Beach. http://www.seaturtlehospital.org/ Just email the owner who is Jean Beasley she can set up the inturnship for you. At MarineBio they need volunteers just check the site. If there is a lake, river, or at the beach if there is a lot of trash see if you can get into those volunteer programs called like The Big Sweep. wear you clean a river or the beach. ...I know when I was looking at the 2 colleges, I had the hardest time figuring out their websites. Maybe Im just bad at that. As far as around the schools, UCF is of course in Orlando so you have Disney (The living seas, Animal Kingdom, the swim with the sharks tank at Typhoon Lagoon), Universal has a few things like that I think... maybe, SeaWorld (you may not like them, but they do indeed have animals...), Discovery Cove, and Zoos USF has The Florida Aquarium, is more coastal (more volunteer programs around the ocean), Big Cats Reserve, Busch Gardens, and Mote Marine Lab is in Sarasota (kinda far, but closer to Tampa than Orlando) And of course the Keys are in Florida <3 It doesnt matter which school you go to because it's not close to either. Though it is close to Florida International University, which I considered going to but it's in Miami and my mom refused to let me. ...She walks slowly back to the water. The waves quickly engulf her body and shell. She disappears into the endless sea. Ever since my first sighting of a sea turtle, I have been striving to learn more and more about marine animals. From gracious turtles to treacherous sharks, I find them all amazing. They are all unique in their very own way. ItâÂÂs so amazing that we have explored more of the surface of the moon than the depths of our seas. Mote Marine offers many wonderful volunteer programs, but unfortunately, being only fifteen years of age, I am too young to volunteer. I am applying for MoteâÂÂs High School Internship Program because I feel it is the best way for me to become more educated about marine life. Normal high school courses donâÂÂt offer in depth research on marine biology. I am very eager to learn the most I can about the ocean and everything in it. Marine biology is my passion and I intend to follow my dreams....
